'Raghuvamsa Sudha' misconception
There are many gem-like compositions in Carnatic music and one of the gems that stands out and is a favorite among instrumentalists is 'Raghuvamsa Sudha' . This crowd enthraller, is composed using the 'Kadhanakuthoohalam' (means 'War Curiosity'?) raga. A couple of years back, I heard the adaptation of this composition in a Chiranjeevi starrer movie. The song is 'Yamahanagari'. This song is dedicated to the city of Kolkata. In the lyrics of this song, the singer says that he is inspired by Thyagaraja's Krithi as he wanders and mingles with people in the streets of Kolkata. I was curious to find the original Krithi from which this hit number was inspired and listen to it. As the lyrics of the above song pointed me to Thyagaraja, I went in that route looking for this composition among Thyagaraja's many. But soon I hit a dead end as I couldn't find the original. With the help of some friends, I found out that the original song was 'Raghuvamsa Sudha', only to realize that this song was composed by Patnam Subramania Iyer who was a disciple of a disciple of Thyagaraja.
Unfortunately, it looks like lyrics of movie songs are not consistent with the facts they convey. Veturi Sundararamamurthy can you explain this? share this: facebook

hi.. in the song he says "chiru tyagaraju" he refers to chiranjeevi as "chiru tyagaraju" comparing the compositional capabilities of chiru (in that movie) to that of Thyagaraju....... Thats what i feel lemme know if this interpretation is wrong....

Hi...I accept with ambica in this regard..I feel that Sandeep misunderstood what sirivennela was trying to convey..In the line " chirutyagaraju nee krutine palikenu mari..." the writer was referring to chiranjeevi and that he was singing the glory of kolkata..".chiru also has another meaning in telugu..meaning small..So chirutyagaraju means a " small tyagaraju..". It is coincidental that the nick name of chiranjeevi also happens to be " chiru..".
So to be clear , the line means.. " small tyagaraju/ chiranjeevi is singing the glory of kolkata.."
So as it is misunderstood, it DOESNOT say " tyagaraju has written the song.."
I think it is "War anticipation" :)
Kuthuhala has that meaning as well...
Have you heard either Peteel Chowdiah or Mandolin Srinivas' rendition of this song? They are ultimate.

The correct English transliteration would be
War Footing
Actually you can easily visualize a sword fight while listening to the notes
Like in fencing a step forward and a thrust and a step back and defensive block of opponent thrust.

It was written by Sri Veturi and there is no way he would ever get the facts wrong.
It's a great usage there. A slesha (pun). What he meant by Chiru-Tyagaraju was Sri Patnam Subramanian Iyer garu was considered mini Tyagaraju for his prowess. Raghuvamsa Sudha is an ever shining example of that.
Besides Veturi garu choose the word Chiru to signify the Hero of the film as well. Only he can apply two situations and glorify then alike. What a Ya-Maha-Poet !!
